Guide to Finding the Right Tyres for Your Motorcycle

Finding the right motorcycle tyres is crucial as they are the sole point of contact between the bike and the road. The tyres have a great role to play in ensuring the driver’s safety and a smooth riding experience. People must carefully select the tyre based on their riding style and maintain the same with due care so they can last long. Buying quality tyres from Dunlop and other popular brands can ensure the quality of the tyres. Motorcycle tyres are ideally of two kinds mentioned below: -

  • Bias-play Tyres: The bias-ply tyres are ideal for bikes that travel on city roads at a moderate speed. These tyres have layers of fabric cords woven diagonally. They have a sturdier side wall which makes them ideal for bikes that carry heavy loads. These tyres also have excellent puncture resistance.

  • Radial Tyres: In radial tyres, the cords run radially from the rim to the tread. This makes the sidewall more flexible and gives a larger contact surface with the road. This kind of construction gives better grip and ensures better safety while driving on rough terrains. Although these tyres are more expensive than bias-ply tyres, they are perfect for high-performance bikes which traverse on rough terrains.

Understanding Tread Patterns

A tread is a type of zig-zag and parallel pattern found on tyres. Tread patterns can be classified into the following types based on the tyres they are found:

Street Tyres

These tyres have smaller grooves on two sides of a central tread. They are meant for commuting on city roads and are designed for enhanced grip and responsiveness.

Sport Tyres

Sport tyres have larger grooves and more aggressive tread patterns. These tyres offer excellent grip and are ideal for sports bikes. They enhance stability while turning corners on dry roads. Thus, they may not be ideal for wet roads though.

Touring Tyres

These tyres are excellent for long journeys and can perform well even on wet roads. With larger grooves on the shoulders, these tyres offer excellent grip even when turning corners.

Dual Sport tyres

Dual sport tyres have a knobby tread and are ideal for long journeys as well as for riding on rough terrains. This type of tyres may not be ideal for riding on city roads.

While these are the specifications to look for in the tyres, people should also consider their riding style while buying tyres. Whether they need xd5 tyre for bike or xd7 tyres will majorly depend on the riding style and the type of bike.
